Jeff Hamacher took up the cello at the age of nine and began receiving private instruction at the age of sixteen. In 1993, he obtained a Bachelor of Music (Honours Music Education with French) from the University of Western Ontario where he studied under Malcolm Tait. He went on to obtain a Bachelor of Education degree at the University of Windsor. In the summer of 1995, he was a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada where he shared principal cello responsibilities. After several years spent overseas teaching foreign languages, he returned to Canada in 2003 and in 2007, he obtained a Master of Education degree from Queen’s University.
Since 2004, he has taught guitar and cello privately at his home studio and for organizations such as the Queen’s Conservatory of Music. He has performed with the Kingston Symphony since 2006 and in August 2012 he was appointed their orchestra librarian. As of the 2012-2013 season, he has been appointed the principal cellist of the Melos Chamber Orchestra and he performs regularly as a member of the Limestone Trio in addition to a variety of freelance engagements with local ensembles.
